The “note matching” method
of tuning the banjo to “G tuning”:
1. Tune the fourth ("D")string (lowest pitched string), to a known "D"pitch(the note below middle C on the piano). You can use a pitch pipe, or a piano or harmonica, etc.
2. Fret the fourth string at the fifth fret to generate a G note and tune the open(not fretted) third, or G, string to match it.
3. Fret the third or G string at the fourth fret to generate a B note and tune the open second, or B, string to match it.
4. Fret the second or B string at the third fret to generate a D note and tune the open first, or D, string to match it.
5. Fret the first or D string at the fifth fret to generate a high G note and tune the open fifth, or high G, string to match it. Now you should be in tune...
